Legends versus Look Alikes: The Answers Unveiled

"Pinot 1:":  Annabella Pinot Noir: A Pinot Noir from California's iconic Russian River Valley, this Pinot is full of aromas of red plum, strawberry, and orange peel.  Medium body, medium-plus acidity, and soft tannins all point to this classic grape variety.

"Pinot 2:" Louis Jadot Gamay: A fantastic look alike grape for Pinot Noir lovers, Gamay is Beaujolais's most planted grape as the region just south of Burgundy, Pinot Noir's homeland.  It is filled with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, black pepper, and chocolate.  Easy to confuse for Pinot, it makes a great alternative to explore.

"Merlot 1:" Giunta Malbec Nouveau: With aromas of red plum, tart blackberry, savory black olives, and baking spices, this Malbec from New Zealand is lighter in style than those coming out of Argentina and could easily be confused for a Merlot.

"Merlot 2:" Art of Wine Starry Night Merlot: This is a classic Merlot from the Pays d'Oc region of France.  With aromas of plum, cassis, cocoa, and baking spices, this medium-plus bodied Merlot is a great example of the grape from France.  Originally from the Bordeaux region, Pays d'Oc is producing some great bang for the buck examples to seek out.

"Cabernet Sauvignon 1:" Nexo Tempranillo: Famous as the key grape in Rioja and one of Spain's crown jewel wines, Tempranillo can easily be confused with Cabernet Sauvignon.  Both have thick skins, higher tannins, and a powerful body, and both can live for decades in your cellar.  This beautiful example from Nexo shows classic notes of dried cherry, figs, and vanilla.

"Cabernet Sauvignon 2:" Funckenhausen Cabernet Sauvignon: While originally from Bordeaux, France, many top examples of this grape now also come from Argentina like this powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.  Filled with aromas of black plums, black cherries, vanilla, and cocoa, this wine is a classic example of the grape.
